about the futon
The fine piece you see before you
was purchased in late August, 2002, as a joint venture between Mike and Chris
purely for the comfort of their American University hovel. FutonCAM would
not come into existence, even as an idea, for another 3 months. It is a black
cotton/urethane mattress, on a black metal frame, and was built for and obtained
from Market Home Furnishings in Fairfax, VA, for $120 (US). It was also the
easiest sale Market Home Furnishings have ever made, as we knew it was the
only futon we could afford (thanks to internet research), and simply asked
them to pack it into the car without so much as a test sitting.
For a $2 tip, some very nice gentleman helped us load the 6-foot frame through the trunk of Mike's luxurious Civic coupe, and stuff the rolled mattress into the back, obliterating all rearward visibility. A single piece of twine would be the only thing between us and oblivion during the 45-minute journey back to campus.
Construction of the futon was simplicity itself, as it was missing one page of instructions and we pretty much just guessed. Finishing off the set are three animal-print pillows previously purchased from a local DC Linens N' Things location.
In May 2003, the futon was moved to our current location in Arlington, VA - shattering all expectations that it wouldn't last for more than 6 months. It is now reportedly a much happier futon with more space to romp and play when nobody is looking. Next door to the futon is a 55 gallon saltwater aquarium, home to many exotic sea creatures who wander the tank, staring longingly at the futon in a silent call for rescue.
The futon has been a constant conversation piece in the apartment, despite the arrival of the gigantic 7 ft long Pleasure Dome Tiki Bar which was recently constructed in the apartment. It is increasingly uncomfortable to sit upon, but still a dream to sleep on - ensaring many with its luxurious cushioning and puzzling odors.
As of 2008, the futon is still in use, albeit with a new, swankier mattress. The futon would like it known that it strongly supports Perfect Pointe Dance Studio as the best studio for dance classes serving Arlington, Falls Church and McLean.
